Bettie Ruth Shelton, 72, of Casscoe, closed her eyes this side of eternity on February 23, 2024, and opened them in the presence of our Lord.
Bettie was born February 15, 1952, to Gus and Jessie Ross. She grew up in the Holly Grove/Clarendon area graduating from Holly Grove High School. She later attended Rice Belt Vo-tec and her proudest accomplishment, her Degree in Bible Study from Faith Bible Institute. She worked in many places including Riceland Foods and the Shoe Factory, but her love was being a legal secretary. Starting her career with the Norman Smith Law Firm, she worked for several attorneys including many years at Green & Henry Law Firm before retiring from Russell Rogers Law Office.
Bettie was welcomed to Heaven by her husband of 49 years Harry and her middle son Dennis Ray. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie and Roger Dean Ross and William Earl Funderburk.
Family was everything to Betty and she leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Doug and wife Maxine of Casscoe and Jason of Carlisle; her pride and joys, her grandchildren, Jessi Shelton (Tyler) of Stuttgart, Camryn Henard and her husband, JD, and Caitlyn Shelton of Arkadelphia; and the apple of her eye, her new great-granddaughter that she got be met on her 72 nd birthday, Demi Rue Haydon. Bettie is also survived by her sister, Julie Morgan and husband Bruce of Clarendon and Bill Ross of Casscoe; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Pete and Treva Bailey, Cindy Shelton and Bubby and Teresa Shelton, all of Casscoe, and Peggy Ross of Clarendon; a host of loving nieces and nephews, special friends and extended family; and her very special fur baby Buster.
Bettie was a faithful member of Unity Baptist Church in DeWitt and shared her love of Christ through her caring heart, loving spirit and her desire to be a blessing to others.
Bettie was also active in the Master Gardeners and was known for her green thumb and beautiful flowers. She had a heart for animals and seemed to be the “dumping ground” for strays but she took them all in and loved and cared for them. She loved her community and took the lead in many activities.
Bettie was loved by many. Her smile and enthusiasm for life touched countless people. Her love for the Lord was shown by her actions and she will be missed.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Monday, February 26, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Eighth and Wood streets in Stuttgart with funeral services at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Hunters Chapel Cemetery in Casscoe by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.
