Eugene Joseph Scherm

Eugene Joseph Scherm left this world on November 1, 2023. He was 89 years old.

Born in Stuttgart, AR on April 22, 1934, Eugene lived near the Pontiac community but was raised and grew up in Ulm on the family farm.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents Leo Scherm and Geneva Travis Scherm as well as his brother, William Scherm. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Davis Scherm; daughters Tami Danielak (Ron) and Amy Berg (Joe); grandson Joseph Stewart (Morgan); and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Hope Stewart. He is also survived by his sisters Dorothy Wilson (Tommy) and Teresa Barnett (Bill) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Eugene was a graduate of DeValls Bluff High School in 1952. After high school, he went on to serve in the Army. He then returned home and began farming on his own. This was to be his chosen occupation for the next 57 years.

In between returning home from the Army and going out on his own farming, Eugene met, fell in love with and married Sandra Davis. They built a life together that would carry them 65 years through both great and not-so-great times. They worked at marriage and at parenting. They stuck together and prospered.

During Eugene’s years as a farmer, he had the privilege of serving on the Producers Rice Mill Board of Directors for 27 years. He took great pride in holding a seat on the board and always tried to serve the farmers he represented to the best of his ability.

Eugene was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He had a strong faith in the Lord and was a dedicated Catholic. He was a good man who placed great importance on having a church home.

Eugene also served as the Holy Rosary ICCM food bank representative for approximately 10+ years. He was very dedicated to this ministry and loved his work as the “Food Man”.

He was a deer and duck hunter (and sometimes goose and turkey), though not what one would call a “serious hunter”. He was a member of Big Creek Deer Club for 30+ years. At times, he seemed more interested in the camaraderie than the hunting.

Eugene’s family will tell you that he was a good provider. He provided immense love, joyful laughter, and good times as well as a good ear, advice and a strong shoulder.

He was a loving husband and father. He never seemed bothered that he had two girls and no boys. He truly was the best dad ever. He sat through dance recitals, piano recitals, and basketball games. He was a gentle giant who never raised a hand to his girls. He left that for their mom to tend to.

We were amazed to witness the love he would have for his grandson, Joseph. He never minded not having a son because a grandson would be in his future. Eugene wanted to be called “Buddy” because “that’s what I’m going to be - Joseph’s Buddy”. And he was!

Just a few of his favorite quotes: “I love life!”, “That’s when I was Big Time Farming!”, “I am a friend to the doe”, “I always go for the middle-priced one”, “That was back when we were rich”, “I’ll get around to it”, “I try to have an extra one or two on hand ( of everything!)”, “and you know I love you”

Eugene’s family, especially Sandra, would like to thank his faithful caregivers, Connie Buerkle and Debora Hardimon. You were so good to him, and we were blessed to have you both there with him. You two will always hold a special place in our hearts. We also wish to thank the wonderful people with Arkansas Hospice. Your help as Eugene prepared to leave us was so needed and appreciated. Your staff was always patient, caring and kind. We will never forget the care that you all gave him.

Also, we wish to thank Dr. Noble Daniels and his staff for the care they provided. When things were getting more difficult, they were so accommodating and conscientious.

We would like to invite friends and family to visitation on Sunday, Nov.5, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Turpin Funeral Home followed by a rosary at 5:30. And to the funeral mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Monday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Holy Rosary Cemetery .
