Leland “Lee” Foster Morgans, 83, husband of Betty Jean Morgans, of Summerville, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023.
The relatives and friends of Lee Morgans are invited to attend his funeral service at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1600 Old Trolley Road, Summerville, SC 29485. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Stuttgart, Arkansas, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart www.turpin-co.com .
Lee was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas, on June 30, 1939. He was the son of Leland “Mutt” Morgans and Frances Chaney Morgans. He was a full professor of Biology and Health Sciences for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for 35 years. He was the head of the Biology Department for four years and President of the Faculty Senate. He also taught at Kennesaw State University outside of Atlanta. He received degrees from Texas Lutheran University (B.S.), the University of Arkansas (M.Sci) and Oklahoma State University (PhD -Biology).
He loved to play basketball, racquetball, swim, ride his bike, play ping pong, and ballroom dancing. He won numerous racquetball and ping pong titles in Arkansas and Georgia and played ping pong in the Senior Olympics five times. He loved to learn about history and was especially interested in the Civil War. Along with his wife, he traveled to over 67 countries and all seven continents. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and held numerous church leadership positions including Congregational President and Vice President, Elder, and Sunday School teacher. He loved being a grandparent and was very involved in teaching his grandchildren how to swim and enjoyed attending their school and athletic functions.
Lee is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Morgans; their children, Bradley (Christie) and Stephanie (Rich) and their grandchildren Matt Morgans (Ali), Nicole Willsea, Richard Willsea, and Lauren Willsea. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland “Mutt” and Frances Morgans and his aunt, Dr. Dolly Morgans.
